We meet a man named Steve, a struggling and down on his luck doorknob salesman. Steve’s life is fairly boring- that is until he breaks into a mine, something he’s wanted to do since he was a child. Inside the mine, Steve discovers two artifacts; the Earth Crystal and something called the Orb of Dominance. When combined together, the two artifacts create a portal to something called the Overworld, which is made entirely of easily manipulated cubes, which Steven can build to his will.
Steve decides to build his own paradise in the Overworld. One day, however, Steve manages to stumble across a portal to a place called the Nether, a hellish and brutal world. In the Nether is a piglin ruler named Malgosha who is obsessed with gold and hates creative people. Malgosha has imprisoned Steve because of this. Malgosha is looking for the Orb of Dominance, as it would allow her to control the entire Overworld, but Steve has Dennis, his dog, hide both the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal back under his bed in the real world.

Later, a man named Garrett Garrison, aka, ‘The Garbage Man’, owns a failing video game store in Chuglass, Idaho. Garrett is a former 1980’s video game champion. Down on his luck, Garrett heads to a storage auction hoping to sell items to make some cash. Garrett ends up winning all of the contents of Steve’s old house, as Steve has been occupied in the Overworld for years and years. Garrett hopes to find an old Atari Cosmos, but instead he happens upon both the Orb of Dominance along with the Earth Crystal. He takes these back to his shop.
A pair of siblings, Henry and Natalie, move to Chuglass. On their first day at a new school, Henry gets into trouble when his homemade jetpack destroys the school mascot. He pretends that Garrett is his uncle, who takes him to his video game store to discuss his options. At the store, Henry combinnes the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal, which leads the two to the mine. Natalie is worried about her brother’s whereabouts and calls Dawn, their real estate agent, to help locate Henry. The four of them eventually end up in the Overworld. Upon their entrance, Malgosha is alerted that the Orb of Dominance has once again arrived into the Overworld. She releases Steve from his prison to go claim it, bluffing that she is holding Steve’s dog Dennis hostage.
Later, Henry is learning how to build and makes himself a wooden fortress. As he is fighting off monsters, the Earth Crystal is destroyed in the process. Steve appears and defeats the monsters. He informs them that a replacement Earth Crystal can be sourced from the Woodland Mansion. He leads them to a village and teaches them how to craft. But as he does, piglins launch a raid on the village. Steve, Garrett, and Henry escape, but are separated from Dawn and Natalie, who discover Steve’s dog, Dennis. Because of this, Malgosha sends out the Great Hog.

Steve makes a passing mention about his wealth of diamonds, which interests Garret. He demands Steve to provide diamonds in addition to handing over the Orb of Dominance. The three find the hoard, but Henry becomes angry and fearful of his sister Natalie’s safety. The Great Hog arrives, but the three flee using minecarts until the Great Hog is destroyed by creepers. Once the three arrive at the mansion, Steve and Garrett distract the inhabitant pillagers so Henry can acquire both the Earth Crystal and something called the Ender Pearl, which allows one to teleport
Malgosha returns and blows up the bridge to the mansion. Henry loses the Orb of Dominance and Garrett sacrifices himself in the blast. Steve and Henry wake up in a mushroom house to find Dawn, Natalie, and Dennis. Malgoshha then uses the Orb of Dominance to superpower the Nether portal, which blots out the sun and declares war on the entirety of the Overworld. The entire party crafts weapons along with an army of iron golems that meet Malgosha’s invading army. Henry uses the Ender Pearl to obtain the crystal, which restores the sunlight and destroys Malgosha and her zombie army.
The entire party, along with Grarett who did survive the blast, return to Chuglass, where they create a very popular video game called Block City Battle Buddies. Dawn makes her dreams come true and opens up a zoo where Dennis is her main attraction. Steve and Garrett own the video game store together, while Henry completes his jetpack and Natalie begins to teach self-defense classes.
