The film begins with a couple named Josh and Iris, who are told that their first meeting, a so-called ‘meet cute’, happened at a grocery store. Josh and Iris are headed to see their friends Sergey, Kat, Patrick, and Eli at Sergey’s isolated lake house for the weekend. The friends spend their first night having a large meal and dancing the night away.

The next day, Iris decides to head to the lake, where she meets Sergey there. He attempts to rape her, but she kills him by stabbing him in the neck. When Iris returns to the lake house, soaked with blood, she attempts to explain the circumstances but Josh tells her to go to sleep.

Later, Iris wakes up only to find herself strapped to a chair, with Josh revealing that she, Iris, is actually a companion robot who is controlled by his phone and that their first meeting was actually an implanted memory. Josh leaves Iris to go check on Kat, who is coming to terms with the shock of Sergey’s murder, Iris manages to escape into the forest with Josh’s phone. It is then that Iris finds out that she, through the app, can change her intelligence level. She sets her intelligence level at 100 and attempts to devise an escape plan.

Jack and Kat reveal that the two had devised the lake house vacation as robbery, hoping to rob Sergey and blame Iris, with Patrick and Eli only there to back them up. When the four are arguing about their cut of Sergey’s money, Patrick hears Kat telling Eli that Patrick isn’t a part of the settlement, as he ‘doesn’t count’. Kat then reveals that Patrick, like Iris, is also a companion bot. Josh admits to jailbreaking Iris’s settings, which would turn off her inability to do harm. With this information, Elu removes Sergey’s gun from his safe and the four split up with the hope of locating Iris in the forest.

As the four are searching for Iris, Patrick lets Eli know that even after becoming aware of his identity as a companion bot, he is in love with him and Eli reciprocates these feelings. Suddenly, the two spot Iris up ahead, but before Eli can shoot Iris, Iris is escaping in Josh’s self-driving car, as she was able to mimic his voice to turn it on. Josh is able to stop the car though, as he quickly uses Sergey’s phone to report the car stolen. Josh also reprograms Patrick to be his companion bot, and by jailbreaking Patrick he turns his aggression to 10o, demanding Patrick find Iris.

Meanwhile, as Iris mounts her escape, she is met by Hendrix, a police deputy. She speaks to him in German in hopes he won’t see that she is in fact a companion bot, as they are supposed to be unable to lie. Hendrix attempts to arrest her, but before he can, he is attacked by Patrick, who beats him to death. He turns Iris off and returns to the lakehouse.

Back at the house, Kat is attempting to leave with half of the money, but is stabbed by Patrick because Josh asked him to stop her. Later on, Josh has Patrick set up a date for Iris and himself. He sets her intelligence to 0 and burns her hand, then commanding her to shoot herself in the head. Iris’s manufacturers, Teddy and Sid, proceed to take Iris away. They inform Joosh that they can reboot Iris, and she also has a backup of everything that she's seen and heard. Patrick, now wearing the police officer uniform from Hendrix, is ordered by Josh to kill them. Patrick does kill Sid, but before he kills Teddy, Iris reboots and stops him.

Iris is unable to harm Patrick,so instead she attempts to appeal to his genuine love and affection for Eli. Patrick, not wanting to go on without Eli, shuts himself down by using the weapon Iris had attempted to use against him. Teddy then allows Iris the ability to fully control herself. Iris heads back to the lakehouse, set on shooting Josh. He attempts to appease her and manages to take her gun, but Iris kills him by stabbing him with an electric corkscrew.

Later, she peels away her ‘skin’ from her damaged hand revealing its mechanic innerworkings, and then leaves with Sergey’s money. While Iris is driving away, she sees a man driving with a companion bot that looks just like her. Iris waves with the damaged hand and smiles at the bot, which confuses the man and the screen fades to black.
