Plot Synopsis

The film begins with a narration from the titular character, a teenage Austin LaRette, or as he likes to be called, Auz-Man, who begins to tell us about a few of his favorite things, such as ranch dressing, which he considers ‘da bomb’. He then goes on to inform us about the story of his parents and how they met. His father, Scott LaRette, has a good job in the medical supply business and hangs out often with his best friend, Joe, though Joe is his imaginary friend he’s had since he was a child.

One day, while shopping for clothes, Scott becomes enamored with the store employee named Theresa and her deep blue eyes. Scott is naturally nervous around Theresa, making a fool of himself by offering to purchase eight identical pairs of pants at the store where Theresa works. Later, Scott and Theresa only go on three dates before she gets pregnant. This is when we see the birth of Austin. In the delivery room, Theresa, Scott, and Joe attend the birth.

Austin is born with something called osteogenesis imperfecta, (OI), also known as brittle bone disease. This means that even in the slightest of accidents, his bones are easily susceptible to breaking. Theresa, his mother, was also born with this disease. This is illustrated by Austin informing the audience that his birth resulted in his ribs being broken. As Austin grows up, he finds that he is also autistic, and his autistic proclivities include constantly wearing a jester’s hat and chatting endlessly, often reciting Jack Nicholson’s monologue from A Few Good Men.

As the years pass, Scott and Theresa have yet another son, named Logan. This is when Scott increasingly turns to alcohol to cope with his challenges, which include ever-increasing medical bills tied to Austin’s brittle bone disease. By this time, Austin is now in middle-school. Theresa has to navigate those same challenges and also her husband’s alcoholism, while managing the house and caring for Logan as well as Austin.

Theresa and Scott are incredibly supportive of their son but his conditions put a strain on the two’s relationship, as the two are also flat-broke from the increasing amount of bills. Scott’s parents, Dick and Marcia, attempt to help as much as they can, but it isn't until Scott befriends a preacher named Rick, who encourages Scott to practice gratitude and joy even though it may be hard to do so.

Through the teachings of Preacher Rick, Scott is able to overcome his alcoholism and find peace throughout his daily life, giving it up to God, trying to find inner-peace even where it might feel impossible. Scott learns that gratitude always outweighs life’s ever-evolving physical challenges and in taking time to appreciate what he has instead of what he doesn’t helps Scott be able to step in and support Theresa in their parental journey. This allows him to appreciate the lesson that raising Austin taught him instead of resenting how difficult it was to do. Together, this makes the bond that Theresa and him share even stronger, which then allows Austin and Logan to thrive together, showcasing the intense bond of the familial unit and how together the four of them can overcome anything.
